Symptoms Checklist

When to Seek Vein Disorder Treatment

Identifying the signs of a possible venous disorder is essential for finding lasting relief. Drawing from decades of specialized cardiovascular experience, Dr. Louis G. Prevosti focuses exclusively on vein disorders at his Canton practice.

If you live in or around North Georgia and recognize the below symptoms, Prevosti Vein Center will treat the underlying venous problem to restore your comfort and activity level. Many patients from Atlanta find that it is worth the drive to receive quality, reliable vein care at Prevosti Vein Center.

Leg Pain, Aching & Throbbing

Persistent leg pain not associated with activity is a common indicator of an underlying vein problem. This deep, aching sensation tends to worsen throughout the day and can limit your quality of life, affecting your work and recreational activities. Wearing compression stockings and leg elevation may temporarily relieve the pain, but without treatment, this and other symptoms will likely progress.

Dr. Prevosti treats the underlying cause of your leg pain, aching and throbbing with minimally invasive procedures like radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation. These approaches seal the affected vein(s), restoring healthy circulation patterns as the blood is rerouted through nearby vessels.

Leg Swelling (Edema)

When the backflow prevention valves in your veins are no longer able to sufficiently close, blood and fluid pool in your lower extremities. In addition to swelling and discomfort, skin issues can occur when this issue is left untreated. As more fluid pools, your legs feel more swollen and uncomfortable, affecting your mobility. Treating the underlying vein problem, along with compression stockings and leg elevation, can help restore leg health and reduce swelling.

Leg Heaviness & Fatigue

Often going hand-in-hand with leg swelling is the feeling of carrying extra weight in your legs. Even without any changes in body weight, pooled fluid in the lower legs can cause you to feel like your legs are weighted down. Especially for those who spend a lot of time on their feet, or sedentary at a desk, this uncomfortable symptom can cause the legs to feel tired.

Dr. Prevosti’s minimally invasive, office-based treatment plans target the specific veins causing these circulation problems, restoring your comfort and natural energy levels. Many patients report the legs feel lighter after treatment.

Varicose Veins

These enlarged, twisted veins that bulge beneath the skin’s surface are a sign of advanced venous insufficiency. Beyond their cosmetic impact, varicose veins often cause significant discomfort, including throbbing, cramping and skin irritation that can interfere with sleep and daily comfort. They are at risk for developing blood clots as well.

There are a variety of therapeutic options for eradicating varicose veins. Ambulatory micro-phlebectomy allows Dr. Prevosti to remove these problematic veins through tiny incisions, providing immediate visual improvement. Another option is Varithena foam treatment. The medicine chemically closes the veins down and over time, the body shrinks down the bulging veins.

Spider Veins

While these small, web-like vessels near the skin surface may seem like a purely cosmetic issue, they often indicate deeper circulation issues. Spider veins can affect confidence in your appearance and may signal underlying venous disorders that will worsen without proper treatment.

Surface sclerotherapy using FDA-approved Asclera effectively eliminates these visible vessels, with Dr. Prevosti's precise injection technique maximizing results while ensuring patient comfort throughout the process.

Skin Changes & Complications

Long-standing venous disorders can cause skin irritation, discoloration, thickening, itching and even ulceration around the ankles and lower legs. These changes indicate that your circulation problems have progressed beyond discomfort to actual tissue damage that requires prompt medical attention.

Calf and Ankle Skin Ulcers

Venous insufficiency is the most common cause of skin ulcers, skin breakdown, and open wounds in the lower calf and ankle. Skin ulcers signify long-standing, severe venous insufficiency. Prevosti Vein Center can help these wounds heal by applying special medicated wraps (called Unna boots, named after their inventor, Dr. Unna) and thoroughly treating the underlying venous disease.

Leg cramps and Restless Leg

Leg cramps, particularly at rest or at night, can be a symptom of venous insufficiency. Leg cramps hurt and can be one of the most annoying symptoms of venous insufficiency. Most patients experience an improvement in cramps after treatment.

Restless leg can also be a symptom of venous reflux. This annoying urge to move the legs occurs in the evening, especially at bedtime. Clinical studies have shown that for patients who have venous insufficiency and restless legs, up to 80% of patients have improvement of this symptom after treatment.

Tingling and Numbness

While not the most common cause, venous insufficiency can cause numbness and tingling, especially in the lower calf and foot. When more common causes have been ruled out, a venous ultrasound can be performed to identify venous reflux. In this situation, vein treatment can be offered.
