VenaSeal™ Closure System

Venous insufficiency develops when the one-way valves in your leg veins weaken or fail, allowing blood to flow backward and pool in your lower extremities. This condition produces symptoms ranging from leg heaviness and aching to visible varicose veins and skin discoloration. While several effective treatment options exist, the VenaSeal™ closure system offers a distinctive approach that uses medical-grade adhesive instead of heat energy to permanently seal problematic veins.

At Prevosti Vein Center, we focus exclusively on treating vein disorders. Dr. Louis Prevosti has over 30 years of cardiovascular expertise and over 15 years of experience dedicated solely to vein care. Having performed tens of thousands of vein procedures, Dr. Prevosti brings the precision and judgment developed through decades of experience to every patient he treats.

What Is the VenaSeal™ Closure System?

The VenaSeal closure system uses a specialized medical adhesive (cyanoacrylate) to permanently close diseased veins. This technique delivers small amounts of adhesive at specific points along the vein, bonding the vein walls together immediately and stopping abnormal backward blood flow while healthy veins take over circulation.

Because VenaSeal doesn't use thermal energy, there's no risk of nerve injury or skin burns, which rarely occur but are possible with heat-based methods. The procedure requires minimal local anesthesia and often eliminates the need for compression stockings or wraps after treatment.

How Does VenaSeal™ Work?

VenaSeal’s cyanoacrylate adhesive creates a permanent seal upon contact with blood. Small droplets of glue are placed along the inside of the vein with a small catheter. The surgeon then presses down on the vein, causing the walls of the vein to glue together. The vein closes down and the blood reroutes through nearby healthy vessels, improving overall circulation.

Tumescent anesthesia is not necessary for the glue technique, as it is a non-thermal closure method. The procedure can be completed with minimal anesthesia focused only at the catheter access site.

Who Is a Good Candidate for VenaSeal™?

You may be an excellent candidate for VenaSeal if you have symptomatic venous insufficiency affecting the great saphenous vein, small saphenous vein or certain tributary veins. Patients who benefit from this treatment often experience:

  • Leg pain, aching or throbbing
  • Leg heaviness and tiredness
  • Leg swelling that worsens throughout the day
  • Night cramps or restless legs
  • Visible varicose veins
  • Skin changes or discoloration near the ankles

VenaSeal offers particular advantages for certain patients and situations. Patients who have difficulty wearing compression stockings for medical or practical reasons may prefer VenaSeal's reduced compression requirements. Those with concerns about thermal nerve injury or who have had complications with heat-based treatments in the past may find VenaSeal's non-thermal approach appealing.

During your evaluation, Dr. Prevosti will assess whether VenaSeal or another treatment method would be most appropriate for your vein anatomy and pattern of venous insufficiency. As with all medical procedures, there are advantages and disadvantages to each treatment method. Dr. Prevosti will create a treatment plan for you and explain why he recommends certain approaches over others.

What to Expect

What to Expect From the VenaSeal™ Treatment Process

1

Comprehensive Evaluation

Your consultation begins with a detailed venous duplex ultrasound examination performed in Dr. Prevosti's Canton office. This imaging maps your complete venous system, identifying which veins function normally and which show signs of valve failure. Dr. Prevosti's RPVI (registered physician vascular interpreter) and RPhS (registered phlebology sonographer) status demonstrates his advanced proficiency in interpreting vascular ultrasound.

Dr. Prevosti takes time during your evaluation to explain his findings and discuss your treatment options. He will outline the advantages and disadvantages of VenaSeal compared to other treatments like radiofrequency ablation or endovenous laser ablation. His straightforward approach helps patients understand their choices and make informed decisions about their vein care.

All evaluations, treatments and follow-ups occur at the same Canton location, eliminating the need to visit separate imaging or surgery centers.

2

Treatment Day

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing on your lower body. You can bring shorts or change into the ones provided before your procedure. While the actual VenaSeal procedure takes approximately 30 minutes, we recommend budgeting 90 minutes for your total time in the office. You can drive yourself to and from the appointment.

After administering a small amount of local anesthesia at the access site, Dr. Prevosti uses ultrasound guidance to map the diseased vein and insert a thin catheter. A precise amount of medical adhesive is delivered at carefully selected intervals along the vein. As the adhesive is placed, Dr. Prevosti applies brief external compression to help the vein walls bond together properly.

Dr. Prevosti's extensive vascular experience enables him to navigate complex vein anatomy precisely while monitoring treatment progress through real-time ultrasound imaging. You remain awake throughout the procedure, and most patients experience little discomfort. At the end of treatment, Dr. Prevosti applies a small bandage to the access site.

VenaSeal™ Recovery and Post-Treatment Care

Unlike heat-based treatments that require compression wraps and stockings for days, VenaSeal often eliminates the need for extensive compression therapy. You can walk, drive and perform light daily activities right away. Many patients, including those with physically demanding jobs, return to work the same day. Light exercise, such as walking or yoga, can typically be resumed immediately, with strenuous activities cleared within a few days.

Post-treatment discomfort is minimal in most patients. Some people notice mild tenderness at the access site or along the treated vein, which typically resolves within a few days. Most patients don't need pain medication at all, but over-the-counter medicines like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can address any discomfort.

Dr. Prevosti schedules follow-up appointments to monitor your healing and assess treatment effectiveness. He typically sees patients within one to seven days after the procedure and again at six weeks. It's not uncommon for more than one vein to need treatment. In most cases, treatments can be done on consecutive days, allowing a faster return to full activity. Treatment plans can be modified based on your schedule and preferences.
