Tingling & Numbness in the Legs

If prolonged sitting or standing causes numbness or tingling in your legs or feet, these symptoms could be due to an underlying vein disorder called venous insufficiency. Persistent numbness and tingling in your legs often signal circulation problems that require professional attention.

Dr. Louis G. Prevosti brings over 30 years of specialized cardiovascular expertise to his Canton practice, where he focuses exclusively on diagnosing and treating venous disorders.

Having dedicated his career entirely to vein care after transitioning from heart surgery, Dr. Prevosti understands the complex relationship between circulation problems and neurological symptoms. His compassionate approach helps patients identify the root causes of tingling and numbness while developing effective treatment strategies.

What Causes Tingling & Numbness in the Legs?

Several conditions can produce tingling and numbness in the legs, including diabetes, nerve compression, peripheral artery conditions and various other medical issues. Venous insufficiency is not one of the most common causes of numbness and tingling, but when other more common causes have been ruled out, venous disease should be investigated. After Dr. Prevosti has performed a history and physical examination, along with the results of the venous ultrasound, he will be able to assess the cause of the symptoms.

Venous insufficiency develops when damaged or weakened valves in your leg veins fail to prevent blood from flowing backward. This causes blood to accumulate in your lower extremities, creating increased pressure within the veins. As pressure builds, it can compress nearby nerves and tissues, resulting in the tingling or numbness. Other symptoms that are associated with venous insufficiency are heavy, tired legs, leg ache and pain, cramps, itching, dry skin and swelling.

Dr. Prevosti's diagnostic expertise allows him to evaluate the various factors contributing to tingling and numbness in the legs, including:

  • Family history of vein disorders
  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing
  • Previous blood clots or leg injuries
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Age-related changes in vein function
  • History of lower back problems or back surgery
  • History of sciatica

With a comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound performed in his Canton office, Dr. Prevosti can accurately determine whether your symptoms stem from venous insufficiency or require referral to other specialists.

What Can I Do at Home to Help Tingling & Numbness?

While home remedies cannot cure underlying vein disorders, Dr. Prevosti often recommends these strategies to help manage symptoms and improve circulation between appointments.

Shift Position

Prolonged sitting can put pressure on the thigh veins and nerves. Getting up periodically to “stretch your legs” will take pressure off. If the symptoms come on when sitting in a particular chair or car seat, try using a cushion designed to relieve the pressure points.

Compression Stockings

If the symptoms are due to venous insufficiency, medical-grade compression stockings may help. Dr. Prevosti can recommend the appropriate compression level based on your specific condition. While compression garments are widely available, using them if the cause is arterial disease or nerve compression will not help.

If compression stockings make the symptoms worse, do not use compression. This is why a careful evaluation by a knowledgeable provider is important.

Elevate Your Legs

If the symptoms are due to venous disease, elevating the legs may provide relief. This position allows the affected leg(s) to work with, not against, gravity and may alleviate tingling sensations by decreasing the pressure on nerves. Lying comfortably on a sofa or your bed with legs propped on pillows is a safe and effective way to achieve this.

If the symptoms are due to peripheral arterial disease (PAD) or disc herniation, then this maneuver may make symptoms worse. You should seek medical evaluation for numbness and tingling in your legs.
