From the Operating Room to the Office: How a Heart Surgeon Became One of Georgia's Leading Vein Specialists

Most physicians who treat veins arrive in the field from one direction. Dr. Louis Prevosti arrived from several: an engineering scholarship, a surgical residency at one of New York's most demanding hospitals, laser research at the National Institutes of Health and a 17-year career as a heart surgeon in Atlanta. An Engineering Mind Drawn to Medicine

Dr. Prevosti's training began at the University of Colorado, where he earned an engineering scholarship before completing his Bachelor of Science degree. That analytical foundation shaped how he approaches medicine to this day: measure carefully, understand the mechanics and solve the underlying problem rather than the surface symptom.

He earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College in 1983, graduating with election to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society reserved for a small fraction of each class. His classmates selected him as their class president their third and fourth year. His classmates voted to award him the Harold C. Wiggers Award, given to the student who "exemplified the qualities of an outstanding physician." He also received the Charles Eckert Award for outstanding academic achievement in surgery. Surgical Training at Cornell and the Cleveland Clinic

Dr. Prevosti completed his surgical residency at The New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was selected as Chief Resident in Surgery. Chief residency is an earned leadership position, and at a program of Cornell's caliber, it signals the confidence of the institution's senior surgical residents.

He then trained in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, home to one of the most respected heart programs in the world. Operating on the heart and its vessels demands precision measured in millimeters. That discipline never leaves a surgeon, and patients feel it decades later in the steadiness of his hands during a vein procedure.

Laser Research at the National Institutes of Health

Between his residency years at Cornell, Dr. Prevosti spent two years as a Guest Researcher at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. His research focused on laser applications in cardiovascular medicine, including new methods of reopening blocked arteries and the behavior of vessel surfaces after laser treatment.

That work produced publications in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, on topics such as laser-assisted angioplasty and laser-based plaque detection. In the late 1980s, this was frontier applied physics in medicine.

Nearly four decades later, laser energy is a mainstream treatment for venous insufficiency. When Dr. Prevosti performs endovenous laser ablation in his Canton office, he brings a perspective few vein specialists anywhere can claim: he was studying how lasers interact with blood vessels before the technique existed.

Seventeen Years as a Heart Surgeon in Atlanta

In 1991, Dr. Prevosti began his cardiothoracic surgery career in Atlanta, where he performed more than 5,000 open-heart operations and 1,000 thoracic operations. His colleagues repeatedly placed him in positions of leadership at Piedmont Hospital, where he served as Acting Section Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Medical Director of the cardiovascular ICU and Chairman of a hospital committee dedicated to improving surgical quality and value.

Years spent handling fragile cardiac arteries and veins built a technical foundation that translates directly to modern vein care. It's one reason his ambulatory microphlebectomy technique removes bulging varicose veins through tiny access sites while preserving the surrounding tissue.

A Transition to Vein Care

In 2010, Dr. Prevosti decided to focus exclusively on the outpatient treatment of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. He founded VEINatlanta in 2011 and grew it into one of the largest and most respected vein practices in the country. He personally performed more than 20,000 vein procedures over the following decade. After his clinics were acquired in 2021 by Center for Vein Restoration, a national vein company, Dr. Prevosti remained in a leadership role there for several years. What he found in corporate medicine clarified what he valued most: independent private practice.

In 2025, Dr. Prevosti founded Prevosti Vein Center in Canton, Georgia, as a return to private practice. The practice is pure vein care.
